Bristol City Council is leading work on Open Source Office Software, drawing on their experiences evaluating StarOffice (based on the Open Source OpenOffice.org), gathering a wide range of information to support their decision to adopt it, and implementing it across 5,500 desktop computers.

We have published a range of information on this portal including:

  • Guidance on building a business case for migrating to Open Source Office Software  more...
  • A database of information about the office software integration requirements of Local Government business systems  more...
  • A comparison of the features in MS Office 2003, StarOffice 7/OpenOffice.org 1.1 and StarOffice 8/OpenOffice.org 2  more...
  • A deployment and migration resource pack, accompanied by a range of practical resources  more...
  • A communication resource pack containing re-usable intranet and presentation materials  more...
  • A training pack giving guidance on constructing a blend of training methods, and a Computer Based Training starter kit for StarOffice 8/OpenOffice.org 2  more...
  • Documentation and code examples of XML forms using the new capabilities in StarOffice 8/OpenOffice.org 2  more...
  • Using StarOffice to handle Government Return spreadsheets  more...

Bristol is also offering Council officers the opportunity to visit Bristol, meet the implementation team, ask questions about the challenges faced and solutions we have developed, and hear from users who have been through the migration to StarOffice.

We are also working in collaboration with other Open Source Academy partners to encourage Local Government software vendors to improve their support for Open Standards and Open Source products, including the practical development of integration with StarOffice/OpenOffice.org
